Do Ants Taste Like Bacon? Tarzan Seems To Think So

These beasts, some of the largest ants in the world, are eaten toasted and are said to have a "nutty, bacon-like taste" — at least according to the marketing that sells the ants pre-toasted. But these ants are still halfway around the world from

First self-driving vehicle death

Tesla Model S (credit: Tesla)

A Tesla Model S car was involved in a fatal crash yesterday, Tesla Motors announced today, June 30, on its blog.

“Joshua Brown, a 40-year-old Ohio owner of a Tesla Model S, died when his electric car drove under the trailer of an 18-wheel truck on a highway in Williston, Fla.,” The Wall Street Journal reports, based on local news reports.

“The vehicle was on a divided highway with Autopilot engaged when a tractor trailer drove across the highway perpendicular to the Model S,” according to the blog. “Neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake was not applied. The high ride height of the trailer combined with its positioning across the road and the extremely rare circumstances of the impact caused the Model S to pass under the trailer, with the bottom of the trailer impacting the windshield of the Model S.”

The blog also noted that whenever autopilot is engaged, the car reminds the driver to “Always keep your hands on the wheel. Be prepared to take over at any time” and “makes frequent checks to ensure that the driver’s hands remain on the wheel and provides visual and audible alerts if hands-on is not detected. It then gradually slows down the car until hands-on is detected again.”

Tesla said it reported the accident to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration immediately after learning about it yesterday.

Brown maintained a YouTube channel focused on the Tesla 7.0 Autopilot.

Notes on the Safety in Artificial Intelligence conference

I recently attended the Safety in Artificial Intelligence conference sponsored by the White House at Carnegie Mellon University. I posted my notes and observations here: http://ift.tt/29uvXep

However, I know that this subreddit is more focused on technical details of machine learning and verification rather than long term AI risks, and there is more that I learned on the former front which I didn’t put in the linked post. So let me know if you would like to know anything about the discussions on AI reliability and robustness and I will answer your questions as best as I can.

‘As is the case for most insects, army ant brood temperature is a key determiner of the time required for each hatched egg to reach adulthood,’ said Kaitlin Baudier, a graduate student in Drexel’s College of Arts and Sciences, who teamed with Drexel

Ask Clay: Why do ants run around in dark?
azcentral.com
I was out in my pool at 4 a.m. getting out the leaves from the night’s wind. Along the perimeter of the deck I could see ants scurrying about. Do ants not stay in their hills until daylight? Why would they be out in the dark? If you were out at that
